Sports

Mixed-Media Assemblage

Overview

Sports examines how personal relationships become preserved through the ordinary objects that outlive them. A Data Framed assemblage preserving the story of “Tommy from Philly” anchors the work, while a Hidden NY baseball bat and floating Hidden NY soccer ball extend downward to form one of Ezra’s recurring exclamation-point structures. The Data Frame, titled “Ezra’s Grandma Barnes Visitor,” preserves the story of Tommy through dimensional typography and a Philadelphia Flyers emblem he gifted to the artist, accompanied by “Rock and Roll, Pt. 2” by Gary Glitter—the arena anthem whose energy became inseparable from Tommy himself. Rather than illustrating sport, the baseball bat, soccer ball, and hockey emblem become carriers of friendship, generosity, and memory. The work demonstrates how relationships continue through the objects that survive them, while the exclamation-point structure quietly signals that these ordinary artifacts have become sites of recognition. Sports does not represent athletic culture. It performs inheritance through objects.
