Field Archive - Photography

Photography forms the largest body of material within the Field Archive.

Created across years of travel, observation, and return, these images preserve places, environments, objects, light, weather, and material conditions as they are encountered.

Most were never intended as finished photographs.

They were made because something was noticed.

Viewed individually, each image preserves a particular encounter with place.

Returned to over time, photographs made in different places and periods can reveal repetitions, changes, and relationships that were impossible to recognize when the images were first made.

Some places appear once.

Others are returned to again and again.

The Field Archive continues to grow as new places are encountered and familiar places are revisited.
