Sports began with a chance encounter.

A stranger named Tommy mistakenly arrived at The Rigley Field and, rather than simply being turned away, was invited inside and given a tour of the studio and Volume I.

Before leaving, Tommy gave the artist a Philadelphia Flyers magnetic bumper sticker as a gift and an object to include in the work.

The encounter was unplanned. So was the object.

The sticker was preserved and became the starting point for Sports, joining two sports objects the artist had already collected: a Hidden NY baseball bat and soccer ball.

The Flyers sticker is incorporated into a Data Framed work above the bat. The bat extends vertically down the wall, while the soccer ball sits below and forward in the room.

Together, the elements form an exclamation point.

The work brings together three objects that arrived through entirely different circumstances: one through a stranger who unexpectedly entered The Rigley Field, and two through the artist’s own earlier collecting.

Nothing about Tommy’s arrival suggested that it would become part of Volume I.

The encounter happened.
The object was given.
It was kept.
The work followed.
