Photographic series

Associations is an ongoing photographic series made through return to the artist’s accumulated image archive.

Over the course of daily life and fieldwork, thousands of photographs are captured and preserved. The series begins later, when the artist returns to this archive and selects images that now draw his attention—for aesthetic, emotional, associative, or other reasons.

Each selected photograph is given a short phrase recording what the image means to the artist at the moment of return. The phrase is placed directly over the photograph, with its color sampled from the image itself. Language becomes part of the visual field while the originating photograph remains intact beneath it.

Some associations emerge through art, architecture, or design. Others are literal, emotional, geographic, personal, or difficult to categorize. The series does not prescribe what kind of relationship must appear.

What matters is that something previously captured has become newly legible.

The completed work is structured as a Data Frame. Time, date, and location preserve the conditions in which the photograph was originally made. Each soundtrack is selected from the artist’s daily playlist for that date, preserving a sonic condition belonging to the same period as the image.

The resulting work therefore holds two moments simultaneously: the original encounter and the later act of recognition.

The photograph, metadata, and soundtrack preserve the earlier moment. The overlaid phrase records what becomes visible through return.

As Associations continues, photographs may be drawn from increasingly distant moments and different periods of the artist’s life. The series becomes an accumulating record not only of what was seen, but of how relationships to what was seen change through time.

The archive preserves the encounter.

Return reveals the association.
